Sage alternatives

Sage is the most Canadian product in its category — bilingual at every tier, GST/HST built for CRA. Leaving it usually means giving one of those up, so know which one you can afford to lose.

Sage is the most Canadian product in its category, and people usually leave it for one reason.

Multi-currency invoicing and multi-currency banking both live on the C$72 Plus plan. There is no partial version on the tiers below. The first US customer is a growth milestone, and in Sage it shows up as a decision about the top plan.

What leaving costs you

Bilingual English and French, on every tier including the C$23 entry plan, plus GST/HST calculation built for CRA submission. Nothing else here does that.

If you operate in Quebec, serve French-speaking customers, or your bookkeeper works in French, that is not a feature you can replace by picking a cheaper product. It is the reason to stay, and you should weigh it before the currency question rather than after.

If multi-currency is the problem

You are mostly choosing which paywall you prefer. Xero puts it on Established. Zoho puts it on Professional. Moving from Sage to either relocates the gate without removing it.

The alternatives that do not tier it are the newer ones, and they trade away the Canadian tax handling and the French interface to get there. That is the actual trade, and it is worth stating plainly rather than discovering in month two.

If price is the problem

Sage is already cheap. C$23 for a real double-entry ledger with GST/HST calculation is the lowest paid entry point in this comparison, and the free options — Wave, Odoo’s single free app — get there by being simpler or by being a suite you are adopting a corner of.

Leaving Sage to save money usually means leaving Sage to have less.

The options

Best for: Handing the file to an accountant who already works in Xero every day. Draft invoices and bills stay out of the general ledger until approved.

Watch out: Multi-currency is on the Established plan. You are moving one paywall, not removing it.

Best for: Breadth in one product — payroll, inventory, time tracking — and the largest bookkeeper population of anything here.

Watch out: It records what you give it, including a wrong entry, and will not tell you which it is holding.

Best for: Companies already inside the Zoho suite. There is a genuinely free tier for one user under a C$50K revenue ceiling.

Watch out: Invoice counts are capped on every tier and multi-currency starts at Professional.

Best for: Anyone who wants the accounting app free for unlimited users, or who wants the source and the option to self-host.

Watch out: Adding a second app moves you to per-user pricing across the whole team — CAD 35.20 per user per month.

Best for: Trading a bilingual interface for automation. Free to 250 transactions a year, $40 a month unlimited, with MCP and CLI access.

Watch out: Accrual is on the $100 plan and no tier files anything for you.

Best for: Canadian and cross-border companies where multi-currency is not an upgrade — USD receipts against CAD card lines, ITCs that depend on documentary evidence.

Watch out: Ours. We do not have a bilingual French interface, which for a Quebec business may end the conversation.

Questions

What does Sage do that the alternatives do not?

Bilingual English and French on every tier, including the C$23 entry plan, and GST/HST calculation for CRA throughout. Nothing else in this category treats Canada as the home market rather than a locale file. If you file in Quebec or your bookkeeper works in French, that is the thing you are giving up.

Why do people leave Sage?

Usually multi-currency. Both multi-currency invoicing and multi-currency banking sit on the C$72 Plus plan, with no partial version below. For a Canadian company billing a first US customer, that arrives as a decision about tripling the bill.

Is there a cheaper Canadian option?

Sage's own entry plan at C$23 is the cheapest real ledger with Canadian tax handling built in, so leaving for price alone rarely works. Wave is free and single-currency. Odoo's accounting app is free for unlimited users. Both trade away the Canadian specificity.
